Stuck in a Cave – David

Scriptures

  • 1 Samuel 24
  • ““You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also…“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:38–45)

Discussion Questions

WHAT (what did we learn from God’s Word?)

  • Who was chasing David? (King Saul)
  • Why was he chasing David? (David had been anointed as the next King, and Saul was jealous and angry)
  • What did David’s soldiers want him to do? (Kill Saul while he was using the bathroom)
  • What did Saul do when he realize David was kind to him? (He cried and said that David would be King and have a mighty Kingdom)

SO WHAT? (Why does it matter?)

  • Why would it be tempting for David to kill Saul when he had the chance? (Gets to be king, no more running and hiding)
  • Why did David feel bad about cutting Saul’s robe? (He dishonored the Anointed One – even though Saul was evil to David, David knew that being evil to Saul would not honor God)

NOW WHAT? (What difference does it make in my life?)

  • Can you think of a time when you wanted someone else to hurt because they hurt you? How did Jesus respond when this happened to Him on the cross (Asked God to forgive them)
  • Does returning good for evil and honor for dishonor mean that we let people hurt us? (No – sometimes we stand up and say “No!” But it does mean that only love can stop hate)
  • How can leading the way in showing love help our hurting world, where lots of people disagree and blame each other for problems?

PRAYER TIME (“TAG Time”)

  • TELL: Tell God how you feel, tell Him the things you are thankful for, tell Him how much you need Him (confess your sins)
  • ASK: Ask God for what you need, ask Him to help you and others (Doctors and nurses, people in our community who don’t know Jesus, our church, the people that we miss seeing, people who may not have their jobs anymore, and anyone else that you can think of.)
  • GIVE: Give God glory, honor, and praise!
